I wanted to be a cameraman from the age of eight.
Images fascinated me long before I ever made a living from them. I remember helping my father in his darkroom, watching black-and-white photographs appear in the developer — and I still find myself doing much the same thing: noticing where the light falls, how one picture connects with another, and how a sequence of images can make us feel something.
Somehow that fascination became my working life.
I've spent my career filming people, places and stories for television, documentary and news — from extraordinary events to an enormous amount of wonderfully ordinary life.

Editing has always been part of the way I see things too. Even when I'm behind the camera I'm thinking about the next picture: How will this cut? Where does this shot belong? What does the story need next? I don't see filming and editing as separate disciplines. One gathers the pieces; the other discovers how they belong together.

I've seen things through the lens that have made me laugh, inspired me and occasionally shocked me. And after all these years, I'm still fascinated by what an image can do.
Cameras are what I've worked with. Images are what I've lived with.
